Stage 1 - Getting The Bike Started |
| Done? |
Task |
Notes |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 10 May '08 |
Clean out garage to make room to work on the bike! |
6 ft high cabinet eventually given away on Cambridge Freecycle! |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 15 May '08 |
Un-jam throttle/carburettor. |
It was jammed open, but removing the carburettor from the engine block released it. I think the cable might be bent at a less than ideal angle when it comes out of the top of the carb, and combined with a lack of lubricant it makes it stick when it's jammed wide open. It's fine when it's not opened right up, but I should probably drop some kind of oil down the cable tube to stop a possible "can't stop!" situation! :-) |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 24 May '08 |
Replace battery. |
|
DONE!!!!! Completed: 25 May '08 |
Drain petrol from system and replace with fresh unleaded. |
Running on unleaded will be perfectly OK unless I run at full-bore for 10K miles per year, which I certainly won't! |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 25 May '08 |
Drain engine oil and replace with 40 grade. |
I also cleaned the gauze filter in the bottom of the oil tank, of course. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 25 May '08 |
Check oil level in gearbox and top up with 50 grade if necessary. |
Oil level OK, and oil quality fine. Nothing else needed here! |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 25 May '08 |
Check oil level in primary chain case and top up with 40 grade if necessary. |
Primary chain case was actually over-full, so some oil removed. Oil quality was also fine in here, so nothing needed doing. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 26 May '08 |
Check that the spark plug sparks. |
It did spark a little bit, but not enough. I therefore cleaned up a slightly cleaner-in-the-first-place plug, put that in instead, and then had to clean the contacts and regrease the points. |
Stage 2 - Before Riding The Bike |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 15 June '08 |
Fix horn. |
It used to just make a "thunk" noise when the button was pressed (listen here). However, having basically loosened some of the incredibly-tight chrome dome nuts on the surface and also re-doing the wires going into the back of it, it now works like a dream! |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 21 June '08 |
Fix rear-right indicator. |
Both left indicators worked, but only the front right indicator worked. The result of this was that the front-right indicator flashed at around half the frequency of the left indicators. This was due to a dead bulb in the rear-right indicator. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 21 June '08 |
Fix leaky fuel tap. |
It was fine when closed, and fine when open with the engine off. However, once engine was running it dripped petrol. It turned out to be the cork seals, so I obtained some replacements here on eBay. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 28 June '08 |
Replace tyres and inner tubes. |
Tyre changing skills kindly taught to me by Rick.Edwards from the AJS & Matchless Owners Club! Thanks, Rick! |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 28 June '08 |
Fix headlight. |
This turned out to be the main headlamp switch on top of the headlamp. This has now been replaced. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 24 May '08 |
Replace or re-thread ignition switch. |
The thread on the ignition switch was on it's last legs so I couldn't tighten the nut tight enough to hold it steady. When I turned the key, it turned the entire ignition switch around, instead of turning the ignition to "on", so it was tricky to do this without holding the switch with your fingers while turning the key. |
Stage 3 - On-Going Maintenance |
DONE (Hopefully)!!!!! Completed: 29 July '08 |
Replace sticky exhaust valve. |
Sarah and I broke down on Sunday 13 Jul 2008 due to a lack of compression. This appeared to be the exhaust valve (which was caked in carbon deposits and slightly bent) so it needed to be replaced! I also had the inlet valve seat recut when I had the exhaust valve seat recut, just to tune it all up a bit. I also had a new exhaust valve guide put in. |
DONE!!!!! Completed: 26 July '08 |
Fix/Replace sticky throttle cable. |
|
| Not yet... |
Fix rear/brake light. |
The rear light and brake light stopped working on the evening of Mon 11 Aug 2008, so I rode home with a torch pushed into the red light cover, all taped to the luggage rack! This obviously needs fixing properly. |
| Not yet... |
Fit wire filter to petrol tap. |
This is to stop the rubbish floating around in the petrol tank ending up in the carburettor. |
| Not yet... |
Drain front fork oil and replace. |
6fl. oz. of fork oil kindly provided free of charge by lolski, so thank you very much for that! :-)
Also, the only way to flush through without stripping the forks down is to fill with 6fl. oz. of oil, ride around for a bit, then drain again and re-fill again. I may therefore obtain another 6fl. oz. before doing this properly. I can always drain and replace 6/6.5 fl. oz. and then do the rest another day I suppose!
Basically, according to the manual, you can only drain 6fl. oz. of oil through the drain plug, but it has a capacity of 6.5fl. oz. So you have to either dismantle the forks, or use the method above. I know which I prefer! |
| Not yet... |
Replace split throttle and clutch cables. |
Both cables work fine, but their casings are split and look awful. I am also going to get 2 pairs made and wire them through the bike together so if one snaps, I have the spare there already. |
| Not yet... |
Stop centre stand going so far forward when in use. |
I'm told that the centre stand should be more upright when being used, so I guess I need some new stops in there perhaps? |
| Not yet... |
Put valve on oil feed pipe to stop the oil draining into the crank case when not used for long periods of time. |
|
| Not yet... |
Stop oil leaking from bottom of crank case breather pipe. |
